"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." - Matthew 28:19-20

Ahoy Church,

We're gathering in the tent at Caloundra Christian College this Sunday from 3pm.

I want to continue sharing some of the bigger picture that we find ourselves in as Chrsitians. Last week I shared about God's vision for each of us to be Fully Alive. This week I'd love to encourage you with the 2,000 year old mission that Jesus invited all his followers to participate in.

Discover a mission beyond ourselves

God’s Fully Alive vision for each of us is clear. So is the mission he gave us to fulil it: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

This is known as the Great Commission, not a suggestion. It’s a divine invitation to work with Jesus on the mission that he started. It’s a collaboration with God to see humanity realise its original design.

While each of us has our own unique contribution to this mission, it’s important to realise that every Christian church has an active, critical role to play. The first Christians took Jesus at his word, responded to the invitation, and 2,000 years later, we are the living fruit of their radical obedience to this mission.

Of course the followers of Jesus weren’t really christians in the fullest sense until they received the presence of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised them. Despite the clarity of the mission, no one had the capacity to “go” beyond their home town until God’s power came upon them at Pentecost in Acts chapter two.

It’s at this point that they began to “go! They saw pagans become disciples of Jesus. They baptised those who came to faith. They diligently taught them to obey all that they had heard from Jesus. This spirit-empowered willingness to focus on Jesus’ Great Commission saw the beginnings of the movement that we’re a part of today!

Their story is inspiring, but also confronting.

We have the same Holy Spirit. We have the same gifts of the Spirit. On top of that, we have access to our professional, Western methods. Large buildings. Big budgets. Processes. Slogans. Teams. Colleges. Resources. We even have great intentions, global travel and the internet! Given all that we have in comparison, it’s hard not to longingly hope for even a fraction of their success.

What’s challenging is that their success was in spite of their lack of resources! They had no buildings, budgets, processes, slogans, teams, colleges, resources, intentions, travel, and technology, simply the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

It may be that this lack of resources is what gave them the focus required to execute on the greatest mission humanity has ever been invited to participate in. Given we have the same Holy Spirit they had, it may be that we don’t lack the power or the gifting, but simply the focused time and attention to God’s mission over our own.

In order to continue the radical, Spirit-empowered obedience our forefathers modelled, I want to encourage us all to ensure we each intentionally, radically, lovingly focus our time and attention on realising God’s vision and fulfilling Christ’s mission.

Much love, see you Sunday!

Dan

Our Mission

To help people find and follow Jesus.

Our Vision

Fully Alive through faith in Jesus. To see vision come to life, we developed FAM, our Fully Alive Model. Ideally, you can work through FAM with someone else.

Our Rhythms

Get to Know Jesus: how are you getting to know Jesus this week?
Invite people into your life: who can you intentionally open up your life to?
Gather and get involved: who can you connect, listen, share, or pray with this weekend?

Giving Up, In, and Out

Our church follows the same simple pattern of giving that we encourage each other individually: UP, IN, and OUT.

Giving UP

As a church, we give 2.5% to our denomination to support what's happening in churches like ours statewide and show appreciation for all the support they provide. We encourage each follower to consider giving "up" to support their local church - in this case ours :)

Giving IN

We give to personal/family needs within our church from our $5,000 Giving Kitty. Please alert us if you know someone with genuine needs that you're unable to meet out of your own resources.

Giving OUT

This term, we are encouraging our church to give to the family who visit us each year from the country where they share Jesus. We'll give to them as a church, and we encourage you to give to them too.
