“[Jesus] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” (Hebrews 1:3)
Ahoy Church,
I greatly enjoyed gathering together Sunday to worship! As I said, my hope is not that we just “get to worship” each month, but that each week we gather we “become worshippers”! That’s the goal of our gatherings, that we are each encouraged to become the “fully alive” people God created us to be.
“Church isn’t just to do worship but to produce worshippers.”
As I shared on Sunday, our bookmarks are promoting that we all take time to read through the book of Herews together in October. Aimee has broken down the book into digestible chunks. If you prefer to listen to the Bible rather than reading it, please check out The Bible App!
Week 1: Chapters 1-4
Week 2: Chapters 5-7
Week 3: Chapters 8-10
Week 4: Chapters 11-13
As you will see in the first few verses of Hebrews, Jesus is introduced as “better than” any previous (or future!) messenger from heaven. This morning, I was so struck by this that I took a photo and decided to highlight it to us all this week!
It’s not just a great reminder, but it’s a critical part of understanding Christianity’s core message. Even yesterday I met a wonderful man who thought our church gathering was great. However, his understanding of Jesus was not, “better than”, all other messengers.
My new friends heartfelt and well-intentioned perspective was that Jesus was closely aligned with the prophets of old.
While he was genuinely excited about this observation, it stands apart from the Good News of Jesus. He is not simply bringing similar or even new messages from God. Rather Jesus - God’s Son and Creator-Sustainer of the universe - was bringing the first complete message regarding God’s plan of salvation for us all.
This is why on Sunday we didn’t sing songs to Moses, Abraham, Noah, Paul the Apostle or Mary the mother of Jesus! As unique as they were in salvation history, they cannot save us.
Jesus is uniquely identified as God’s Son, saviour of the world, worthy of honour from us, creation and even the angels in heaven!
May you enjoy Hebrews as you encounter the beauty of Jesus, the richness of the bible and the love God has shown for us all.
