When you're learning to pray or feeling distracted in prayer, you can always try using a simple meditation on a Psalm to centre your attention on God. Using a candle also adds another tool to quieten distraction and bring your soul to rest in God's presence.
Step #1
Light a candle. If you get distracted, use the candle to focus back on God.
Step #2
Open your Bible to Psalm 23, verses 1 to 3
Step #3
Ask God to guide you as you read his word and pray.
Step #4
Prayerfully consider each phrase.
- Read each phrase separately
- Pause after each phrase; allow the scripture to sink in.
- Allow God to bring to mind his encouragement through each phrase.
If helpful, meditate on these questions
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.“Holy Spirit, reveal how you are MY Good Shepherd.”
He makes me lie down in green pastures.“Holy Spirit, how might I lay down in surrender?”
He leads me beside still waters.“Holy Spirit, may your still waters still me.”
He restores my soul.“Holy Spirit, restore my soul.”
