“Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!"
- Psalm 31:24
Ahoy Church,
As yuou know, in Term 1 we are highlighting one of our church rhythms, INVITE, and one of the three skills Jesus taught in his sermon on the mount, GIVING. Our goal is always that by following Jesus' teaching and example we don't miss out on anything he offers us in life and eternity!
Despite our best intentions, Christians in the West can often teach about giving in a self-interested (or church-interested) manner. While Jesus certainly taught that "it's better to give than to receive", Jesus-like giving always costs us something and benefits someone else.
However, we rarely consider the benefits of generosity beyond the obvious financial ones.
This week Martine found a great video from Voice of the Martyrs. In a small snippet of a VOM conference, Sister Neda shares how you can spot a Christian in Iran.
Do you know how she says you can spot a christian in Iran? Kindness.
In a country where you can be severely punished or killed for being a Christian, Neda says that when people witness your kindness to them they will confrontingly ask, "Why are you doing this? Are you Christian?"
If you've been a follower long enough to accept it as your new normal then you may have forgotten how rare it is to experience the unearned love of Jesus from another person in your life.
This leads us to one of most powerful parts of generosity - it introduces people to a a whole new way of seeing the world.
In a world that seeks to get their needs (real or perceived) met, Christians are called to meet the needs of others.
In a country where "giving" is about asking people to meet the needs of churches, we aim to be a church seeking to meet the needs of those among and around us.
It may be that following Jesus' call to 'give' isn't to make you a "better" person, but to radically introduce people to the personal goodness and grace of God himself.
As we explore giving this term, let's imagine a world where Aussie Christians were generous in ways that people would confrontingly ask us, "Why are you doing this? Are you Christian?"
Much love and see you Sunday,
Dan

Jun 19-21 Church Camp @ Cobb & Co
Church Camp!
We are planning a church camp at Cobb & Co around mid-year. Stay tuned.
Our Mission
To help people find and follow Jesus.
Our Vision
Fully Alive through faith in Jesus. To see vision come to life, we developed FAM, our Fully Alive Model. Ideally, you can work through FAM with someone else.
Our Rhythms
Get to Know Jesus: how are you getting to know Jesus this week?
Invite people into your life: who can you intentionally open up your life to?
Gather and get involved: who can you connect, listen, share, or pray with this weekend?
Giving Up, In, and Out
Our church follows the same simple pattern of giving that we encourage each other individually: UP, IN, and OUT.
Giving UP
As a church, we give 2.5% to our denomination to support what's happening in churches like ours statewide and show appreciation for all the support they provide. We encourage each follower to consider giving "up" to support their local church - in this case ours :)
Giving IN
We give to personal/family needs within our church from our $5,000 Giving Kitty. Please alert us if you know someone with genuine needs that you're unable to meet out of your own resources.
Giving OUT
We encourage giving to several Christian projects beyond our church and local community: individual missionaries in Africa and Mongolia, an aid project in Cambodia, a local community non-profit called Sprout, and a church plant in Walkervale (Bundaberg). We'll give to them as a church, and we encourage you to give to them too.
Last month's giving: $9,880
Last month's expenses: $9,584
Balance: $85,655
Giving in : Oct 23-Jan 26: $5,000
Giving out : Oct 23-Jan 26: $16,293
"Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed." - Proverbs 19:17
If you would like to support what we are doing and our giving to those in need, you can get started giving to Open Road to meet the needs of our church or get in touch with any questions you may have.
